PIGEON MOUNTAIN CAVE TOURS

Here in Georgia, many of our Wildlife Management Areas are used for more than just hunting, including Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA. This area, located in LaFayette, Georgia, is a premier location for many different recreational activities including hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and our favorite, caving.

Some of the most fantastic caves in the world are located on this property, including some of the most dangerous ones. Without the knowledge of safe caving practices, the correct gear, and proficiency in Single Rope Technique (a way of going up and down a rope that was developed by cavers), it is extremely likely that you may injure yourself, your group, or the rescuers who are sent out to help you. Unfortunately, this does happen as people find basic information on these caves on the internet and decide to venture into them on their own without the tools or experience they need to be successful.

We encourage anyone with an interest in this amazing location to come on one of our basic Wild Cave Tours on Pigeon Mountain. We will give you the gear you need (helmet, headlamp, kneepads, and gloves) and the guides to teach you how to cave safely for the protection of you and the fragile cave environment, how to navigate in a cave, and show you many of the beautiful things the underground world has to offer.

Our Wild Cave Tours on Pigeon Mountain take you into Pettyjohn’s Cave – a rock lovers paradise.

Pettyjohn’s Cave was named for a local Walker County family, and in fact, G3 owner Christine Rose’s Great-Grandmother was Margie Pettyjohn, a sister to 1 of the brothers who previously owned the property. The history of this cave is long and we have seen signatures dating back to the mid-1800s in this cave. We do not offer our tours in Ellison’s Cave as this is one of the most dangerous caves in the country that requires an enormous amount of training to go into. We also do not offer vertical cave tours, but we still make sure that you have the experience of a lifetime with us in the cave.

Caves are not located in cities and do not have addresses, so we give you detailed directions upon making a reservation for you to meet us in a gravel parking lot on Pigeon Mountain. There are no facilities in this parking lot, so we ask that you take care of any restroom needs or changing of clothes before you arrive. Once we meet you, we give you a last chance to sign waiver forms and give you the gear you need to cave safely. We fit you for a helmet with a headlamp, kneepads, and gloves and will take your clean “before” picture if you bring a phone or camera. Once everyone is ready, we do a safety talk and take a short walk to the cave. Worried about losing your keys? Feel free to pre-purchase one of our waterproof pouches, strong carabiners, or even a dry bag to carry them with you in the cave.

Reactions upon getting to the entrance are usually very similar and we get our participants stares as they question us, “This is it?” It sure is!

While the cave entrance at the cave on Cloudland Canyon is one of the largest, this cave entrance is one of the smaller ones and just appears amongst a pile of rocks as a small hole in the ground. We slide down the rock into an amazing world of limestone, stalactites, and stalagmites and often see salamanders, cave crickets, and bats right in the entrance! There are no lights, no pathways, no railings, and no cell service or WiFi for your trip into this unique world. Your adventure continues onto large piles of rocks called breakdown, walking hallways, slopes where you scoot carefully to get down, and fun physical challenges. No matter which length tour you choose, you will enter into the large, entrance room as there is one way in and one way out of this cave.

This is a true cave experience, something that is often referred to as “spelunking” and we would be thrilled if you came with us to crawl, climb, push, and pull your way through the rocks, muds, and mud puddles we come across. This is a public cave, meaning that you may encounter other groups, but one of the great things about G3 is we know multiple routes and will often take you into other places in the cave to avoid the crowds.

One of the great things about this cave is we do not have to worry about flooding, closed months, or participant limits as we do when we are guiding at Cloudland Canyon.

This cave is open to us year-round, except for three closed weekends (one in Oct, one in Nov, and one in Dec) for a Deer Hunt. When you are with us on a tour, you must pre-purchase a Land Use Permit or Hunting Permit. These can add an additional $7.50- $12.50 per participant over the age of 16, so please consider this prior to making a reservation. Head to our FAQ page for more information on this pass.
